7 & 7: Give vs. Receive
REFLECTION:
What is the point of privilege? More privilege or giving back? To which do we attach honor? Giving blesses twice again, to the giver and the receiver. You can manage success by pulling in, but values are expressed in the putting out. After the having of wealth, what else is there to do but figure out how to use it wisely, how to breed happiness? In all, there is a need to give, as in all there is a need to receive the mercy of others. Giving to a need makes you necessary. So when asked, it is wise at least, to consider responding.
MUSES:
People of privilege will always risk their complete destruction rather than surrender any material part of their advantage.
J. K. Galbraith
No person was ever honoured for what he received. Honour has been the reward for what he gave.
Calvin Coolidge
To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
Walt Whitman
A successful man is he who receives a great deal from his fellow men, usually incomparably more than corresponds to his service to them. The value of a man, however, should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.
Albert Einstein
I was born into it and there was nothing I could do about it. It was there, like air or food, or any other element. The only question with wealth is what you do with it.
John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
You cannot always have happiness, but you can always give happiness.
Anon.
Should not the giver be thankful that the receiver received? Is not giving a need? Is not receiving, mercy?
Friedrich Nietzsche
Make yourself necessary to somebody.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
