7 & 7: Wise vs. Smart.
REFLECTION:
Wisdom flows from understanding. Knowledge, self-control, and service are its pillars. Wisdom informs what is worth fighting for or not. Wisdom breeds new ideas, new insights and new visions, in a way that simplifies and transmits understanding. Wisdom and maturation are allies. Time carries suffering and hardship, which unleashes insight and growth. With maturity the wise learn patience, trust, confidence and timing. Shadows of fear and blind alleys of indecision and complexity are avoided, leaving only the lessons, only the learnings to linger within the heart.
MUSES:
A wise and an understanding heart.
1 Kings 3:12
Surely the shortest commencement address in history – and for me one of the most memorable – was that of Dr. Harold E. Hyde, president of New Hampshire’s Plymouth State College. He reduced his message to the graduating class to these three ideals: ‘Know yourself – Socrates. Control yourself – Cicero; Give yourself – Christ.’
Walter T. Tatara
It is said that a wise man who stands firm is a statesman, and a foolish man who stands firm is a catastrophe.
Adlai Stevenson
Only the wise possess ideas, the greater part of mankind are possessed by them.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.
Martin H. Fisher
Wisdom comes only through suffering.
Aeschylus
It is characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.
Henry David Thoreau
We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it – and stop there, lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove-lid again – and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cool one anymore.
Mark Twain
Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Let my heart be wise. It is the gods’ best gift.
Euripides
