7 & 7: Feel vs. Think

REFLECTION:

In a task-driven society it is not surprising that thinking is held in such high and serious regard. It after all is the engine producing the raw materials of the mind, some of which, a few of which prove of lasting and true value. But to feel is to be alive, and that is quite a different thing. One advances with experience, the other is most profound it seems in the inexperienced. One is focused on what things are, the other on what might be. One is sustained by facts and figures, the other swallows whole an image or sound or smell and is surprised. One has muscle, the other personality. One has words, the other color. One describes around the edges, the other penetrates deep within, taking words and converting them into poetry.

One looks back with appreciation on the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is a vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.
