Paying Attention to Water

Most of us take water for granted. We turn on the tap, and there it is. But the truth is, by 2025, 63% of the world’s population will be living in water-scarce areas.
That’s why, as I mention in this week’s Health Politics program, we must be extremely mindful of not only where our water is coming from, but also where it goes and what happens to it after we use it. How water is treated and rehabilitated for reuse is a complicated and fascinating process, and there are things we as water consumers can do to assist the process, ease the burden on our water systems, and help maintain a healthy water environment. For example, don’t put hazardous substances down toilets or drains at home, and don’t litter, because litter ends up with wastewater in treatment plants and has to be removed.
For a more complete list of how you can help lessen the burden on our water systems, watch this week’s program or visit the EPA’s Ground Water and Drinking Water site. Do you have thoughts about or insight into this topic? Please comment below.
