Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 12th. How do I know? Because Trish has mentioned it two or three times in the past week. This is one of the many patterns that have evolved over 43 years of marriage that have helped our family – me, our children, and now their families – be successful. Reminders. It is one of the many things she does each day to tip the scale in our favor. Would I remember Mother’s Day if she didn’t remind me? Maybe, probably. But that’s not the point.

The point is she cares about us and cares for us. She always has. And she also is skilled at letting us know what’s important to her – values, memories, celebrating, helping, laughing, doing, persisting, believing, grieving, recovering, succeeding in your own way at your own time.

Bottom line: 1) Mothers’ lives matter to individuals, families, communities and society. 2) Mothers’ lives are not easy but they are real, complex, and challenging. 3) Mothers’ love is powerful and palpable- to feel loved by your mother can last a lifetime, long after your mother is gone.

So I give Hallmark a pass on this one. It’s a holiday worth celebrating and I’ve bought my card. I’m also thrilled that our daughter, Meredith Magee Donnelly, who created the successful site, Homegrown Friends, announced today the new “Celebrating Moms Series”. Its focus in her words, is not about ” ‘moms who can do it all’, but rather on what being a mom means to you- your child’s birth story, a funny story that still makes you smile, a memory that would be inspirational to other mothers, a series of photographs, etc.”

So this Mother’s Day, write your story down on Meredith’s site. Mothering matters big time – pass it on!

For Health Commentary, I’m Mike Magee.
