National Commission for Quality Long-Term Care: Planning for the Past, Present or Future

This past week I spent a day in Washington, DC, as part of Bob Kerrey and Newt Gingrich’s National Commission for Quality Long-Term Care. They had arranged a terrific list of expert testimony and the commissioners themselves have decades of experience in the field. They include a senator, a congressman, and two governors. The net result was a wide range of stimulating discussions, a struggle to decide whether we were far enough ahead of the curve, and a frank discussion regarding readiness for substantive change in the health care system.
Under such circumstances, I always feel like the guy who is saying you’re planning for the present, which is already the past, and we need to plan for the future.
When I arrived home, I, along with my 11 brothers and sisters received an e-mail from my brother Dan regarding a "must see" video on demographic change. After watching it, I felt I should have spoken with a louder voice in DC. Here’s the clip titled: "Shift Happens" — http://www.glumbert.com/media/shift.
