How to make a Video with Apple's built in Camera

1) Launch iMovie (It comes with all new Macs.)

2) Create a New Project Apple-N or File > New

3) Switch to 'Import movie'. Click on on the slider switch to the left of the rewind button. A green led next to your camera should be on and you should see yourself on screen

4) When you're ready to record click the button labeled 'Record With iSight'. Don't forget to look at the camera and not just at your screen. Pretend you are having a conversation with someone. TIP: Write down what you want to say before you speak to the camera. It'll help you communication more effectively. When you record don't read it off the screen. Practice saying it out loud before you start.

5) When you are done click the 'Record With iSight' button again.

6) Save your iMovie project. Apple-S or File > Save Project

7) Editing: If you want to spend more time tweaking the video just drag your clip into the timeline at the bottom of the iMovie application. If not go to the Export step.

You can trim or remove sections from any point in your video timeline. Start the editing process by watching your video a few times. Identify the parts you like and don't like. Is something out of order? Is there a long beginning or ending? If so you can remove it or move it.

To remove a whole section find the end point. Click and drag the little triangle on the timeline called the playhead to find a spot. Use Apple-T or Edit > Split Video clip at playhead. That is your first cut. Next find the beginning of the start point. Use Apple-T or Edit > Split Video clip at playhead to make another cut. Then click on the sub-clip you made. Hit the delete key and it disappears. You can also just click and drag the new sub-clip to another part of your timeline.

TIP: Editing video this way is NON DESTRUCTIVE. When you cut and "delete" a sub-clip you are not destroying data. All the video you recorded is still on your hard drive. All you have done is change the order of your new video on the timeline. In the background the software has created a playlist. Its a recipe for how to assemble your new video. REMEMBER undo is your friend. Apple-Z. :)

8) Export: A simple way to export video from your timeline is to goto the Share menu and select iPod. Then click the 'share' button. This creates a small video suitable for sharing online.

If you want to know more about this process or have other uses for your video please check out this great screencast that describes advanced export settings.
