He is the author of eight books, including "Health Politics:
Power, Populism and Health." He launched "Health
Commentary" in 2007 after several years as host of the popular
multimedia program "Health Politics with Dr. Mike
Magee," which included a weekly video examining megatrends and
"hidden stories" in health care. The award-winning program
produced more than 180 videos on topics ranging from obesity to global
warming for an audience of more than 200,000 subscribers. The programs
are still available for viewing at HealthPolitics.org. In his role as host of
Health Politics, Dr. Magee articulated a new vision of health
populism—advocating a system in which "the people and the people
caring for the people" have equal responsibilities and are vested
together in health outcomes. Dr. Magee continues to share his views on
these topics at HealthCommentary.com. In
2006, Dr. Magee started the Healthy Waters initiative to raise awareness
and generate action on issues related to water—an essential part of
health living. He began touring the country in 2007 to spread this
important message. Dr. Magee spent 13 years as a country doctor in
rural New England before assuming progressive academic and leadership
posts, including senior vice president of Pennsylvania Hospital in
Philadelphia and Director of the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.
He served formerly as a Senior Fellow in the Humanities to the World
Medical Association; a David Rockefeller Fellow; Professor of Surgery at
Jefferson Medical College and a Master Scholar at New York University
School of Medicine. He is currently a member of the National Commission
for Quality Long Term Care, chaired by former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey
and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich. He is also a senior fellow
in health policy at the Center for Aging Services Technology. Dr.
Magee has provided testimony to Congress and has consulted for the
American Medical Association, the American Association of Medical
Colleges and the American Hospital Association. As a health advocate, he
has appeared on "The Today Show," "CBS Morning News"
and "Larry King Live." Among topics Dr. Magee has addressed in
the media are healthy aging, family health, health care reform, patient
advocacy, research and discovery, and the importance of the
patient-physician relationship. Dr. Magee's other books include
"The Best Medicine," "The Book of Choices,"
"Positive Leadership," "All Available Boats,"
"Positive Doctors in America," "Health Politics: Power,
Populism and Health," and "Healthy Homes." Born on
January 20, 1948, Dr. Magee is the son of a house-callmaking doctor and
one of 12 children. He attended medical school in Syracuse, NY, and did
his surgical residency at the University of North Carolina. |
