Cancer survivors and their families have an extraordinary reason to celebrate this New Year thanks to a historic vote by the U.S. Senate last week to approve comprehensive health care reform.  This giant step forward represents a decades-long legislative battle to improve the country’s health care system.

People like Dan Brodrick whose wife died of cancer because she did not have the access to care that could have saved her life; Joni Lownsdale, a breast cancer survivor who is uninsurable because she has a pre-existing condition; and Taylor Wilhite, an 11-year-old cancer survivor who has reach her lifetime cap on benefits are all lauding this huge legislative victory.

As the leading voice for patients in the debate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has worked arduously with elected officials on both sides of the aisle to ensure that a final bill meets the needs of cancer patients.

ACS CAN is depending on lawmakers to improve the bill even further in conference by making quality coverage more affordable for low- and middle-income families and providing uninsured people in dire need of care immediate access to high-risk plans.
